Teaching Experience

I have broad experience in teaching high school students, undergraduates, and graduate students. Before attending NC State University, I taught Principles of Economics in the A-level course system, which is the high school course system for the UK. During my study at NC State University, I worked as an independent instructor for Principles of Macroeconomics for five semesters. I have also served as a teaching assistant for various undergraduate courses. For advanced level courses, I was selected as one of the two instructors out of all graduate students by faculty in my department and taught the Econ Math Camp for new Ph.D. students in Summer 2015.

Teaching Philosophy

To guarantee students understand the course material from first principles, I always illustrate the concepts from the textbook using real-life scenarios. I also ask students to give these examples on their own and guide them to the right track in line with the learning objective. By doing so, students get more interested in the material as they relate the theories to their daily life.

Meanwhile, interactive learning is essential for a successful learning outcome. Other than asking questions, I engage students in leading discussions and group works. These activities prove to be quite effective as the students can benefit hugely from their peers, as well as cultivate the ability of critical thinking.

Students are motivated to learn more given the sense of satisfaction having learned something. According, I find it useful to give students positive feedback whenever they achieve accomplishment in class. This approach is especially practical for intro-level courses I have taught. For advanced level classes, my goal of teaching is to not only provide the tools for research use directly but focus more on the ability to learn new tools on one’s own.

To conclude, my general teaching objective is to give students the motivation to learn economics, which is not only a discipline but more a way of thinking in my opinion. The insights economics principles provide can help students develop the ability to solve real-life issues other than problem sets in class and allocate their scarce resources more wisely, which is the ultimate goal I want to achieve through my teaching.
